Travels With Car Impersonator

Learned two new things today: Steinbeck’s Travels With Charley may contain little to no truth and the man who slowly pieced together Steinbeck’s actual cross-country trip is capable of turning in to a car.

[Mr. Steigerwald retraced] Steinbeck’s journey in a leased Toyota Rav4. And he did sleep in the car, he pointed out in a recent phone interview. He stopped frequently in Wal-Mart parking lots, and once he parked in a car dealer’s lot, impersonating a used car.

Part literary super-sleuth, part transformer.
